nance statement

This series of paintings are an exploration into the transitory beauty of common objects caught in a moment of time.

When I pause and look carefully at something ordinary, I often notice a delightful, unexpected characteristic that inspires me to paint. It might be as simple as the shape of a shadow or the pattern created by reflected light. This one aspect becomes the basis for an entire painting. Because my interest is the appeal of that one feature, I compose the artwork in a straightforward manner, often with tight crops or without extraneous background details.

I am most influenced by the colors used by Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O'Keefe. These artists showed me how color selection gives each painting its own personality. I paint subjects with darker, subtle hues to indicate a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. On the other hand, objects that strike me as playful or exuberant invite me to use brighter and more experimental color combinations.
